How does grounding work?
Grounding in AI refers to the process of anchoring an AI model’s outputs to explicit, real-world information rather than relying solely on what the model learned during training. The goal is to ensure responses are accurate, contextual, and relevant to a specific use case or organization.
In the context of large language models (LLMs), grounding works by providing the model with authoritative, use-case–specific data at the time of generation. This data is not baked into the model during training; instead, it is supplied dynamically—such as documents, databases, policies, or structured records—that the model is instructed to reference when generating responses.
At a high level, LLMs generate text in two ways:
- From learned knowledge
The model draws on patterns and information acquired during pretraining. - From provided context
The model is given explicit source material (for example, for summarization or question answering) and instructed to rely on that information alone or combine it with its general knowledge.
Grounding focuses on the second approach. It guides the model to incorporate explicitly referenced information, producing outputs that are tailored to a particular organization, domain, or moment in time.
Importantly, grounding is not the same as supervised learning or fine-tuning. The model itself is not retrained with new labeled data. Instead, grounding influences the model’s responses by constraining and contextualizing what it can reference during generation.
