What is prompt engineering?

Identifying inputs — prompts — that result in meaningful outputs. As of now, prompt engineering is essential for LLMs. LLMs are a fusion of layers of algorithms and, consequently, have limited controllability with few opportunities to control and override behavior. An example of prompt engineering is providing a collection of templates and wizards to direct a copywriting application.

How does prompt engineering work?

Prompt engineering is the practice of designing and structuring inputs (prompts) so that a large language model (LLM) produces the most accurate, relevant, and useful output for a given task.

LLMs do not “understand intent” in a human sense. Instead, they generate responses based on patterns learned during training. Prompt engineering works by shaping the context and constraints the model sees so it can reliably infer what kind of output is expected.

In practice, prompt engineering works through several mechanisms:

1. Framing the task clearly

The prompt explicitly defines what the model should do:

Clear task framing reduces ambiguity and narrows the model’s response space.

Including relevant background information helps the model ground its response:

More relevant context generally leads to more accurate and aligned outputs.

3. Setting constraints and rules

Prompts can specify boundaries such as:

  • Tone (formal, friendly, neutral)
  • Format (JSON, bullets, table)

  • Allowed or disallowed topics

These constraints act as soft control mechanisms for model behavior.

4. Using examples (few-shot prompting)

Providing examples of desired input–output pairs teaches the model what “good” looks like:

  • Example questions and answers
  • Sample writing styles
  • Correct vs incorrect responses

This is especially powerful for specialized or structured tasks.

5. Decomposing complex tasks

Instead of asking for everything at once, prompts can:

  • Break tasks into steps
  • Ask the model to reason sequentially
  • Request intermediate outputs

This improves reliability for reasoning-heavy or multi-step tasks.

6. Abstracting prompts into templates

In production systems, prompts are often embedded into:

  • Templates
  • Wizards
  • Forms
  • Workflow-based interfaces

End users interact with structured inputs, while prompt engineering happens behind the scenes to ensure consistent results.
